Art Show for Flor M. Campana

Born in Lima, Peru artist Flor M. Campana’s colorful, diverse work puts a twist on images that she recalls from her childhood.

Born in Lima, Peru artist Flor M. Campana studied to be a social worker. In 1991 she left her native country in search of the American dream. Once in the United States, she became a licensed beautician and opened her own salon in Union City, NJ. She was the owner and manager there for over ten years and later sold her business to dedicate more time to her family.

At a very young age, she was given high praises for her artistic talents. She was also always in charge of decorating and setting up activities for her local church. Her interest in painting started only in the last 10 years. She had some formal education in art while in college but is mainly self taught.

Growing up in Peru exposed her to a unique and colorful culture of indigenous and Spanish influence. Some of her earliest memories are seeing native women in their rainbow-like outfits walking amongst alpacas while balancing large baskets of goods on their heads. She describes her work as:

“Diverse and nonstructural with no specific theme or style, turning a monochromatic imagine into polychromatic, like an explosion of colors in one canvas. Simple stuff like putting a funny and modern twist on images that I recall from my childhood.”
