Jason Swartwood is a talented Hoboken-based artist remarkably with no formal art training. His unique mixed-media art has been included in two group shows at the Monroe Center. We’re happy to show these innovative pieces on our walls for the month of May, along with some of his paintings.

Born and raised in our mile-square city, Jaime brings her songs to our li’l stage for the month of May. If you’ve followed the Hoboken music scene at all, then you are likely familiar with her music. Along with brother Dom, cousin Ed Smith and friends Dave Entwistle and Michael Mitolo, Jaime has been rocking loyal fans in the band The Fave for some time now.

The Fave have been described as joyful and poignant, passionate and fun. They’re a band who has that rare gift of being both tight and loose at the same time. We’re really excited to have Jaime playing here.

April has turned out to be an odd month for us because so many of the musicians we contacted to play on Sundays were traveling or had prior commitments. So, instead of crying in our coffee (well, ok … we cried a little), we’ve decided to just open the stage to anyone who wants to play.

Yes it’s true that we normally have open stage six days a week. For April, we’re making it seven. So come by one Sunday (or more). Pluck a guitar, sing a tune, play our piano, shake a tambourine, strum a sitar … use your imagination.

How freakin’ cool would it be to have a sitar player here? Anyone know anyone?

Preceded by generations of artists and frequenting galleries as a child, art was always the backdrop for Dana’s upbringing. Using her father’s spare cameras when she could, she learned the reins of photography in both natural and man-made environments – gravitating towards buildings and fascinated by macro abstractions. Through the photography club in high school, she had her first exhibit at the age of sixteen in a Collingswood, NJ coffee shop.

Ayn Rand’s novel “The Fountainhead” inspired her to move beyond the confines of photography into built space. She received a scholarship to major in Architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. There she excelled, receiving honors and founding the AIA Student group. She served as its first President and was an active member for several years.

In college she combined her extensive photography experience with architecture academia to photograph buildings in sometimes unrecognizable compositions. A number of Newark galleries featured her architecture designs. She now lives in Hoboken, working as a full-time architecture. She continues to study inventive photography in New York City and abroad in her spare time.

We know you loved our $5 sandwich special and we were happy to offer it. Sadly, recent increases in our operating costs have forced us to discontinue that special. But fear not, we’ve replaced it with a brand new one we hope you’ll love.

Starting April 1, 2013 we’ll simply give teachers and school employees a flat 15% discount off of all orders over $5.00. So now when you order sandwiches, burritos, soups, salads, desserts, drinks or whatever, we’ll knock 15% off the total.

Yes, it’s true your bill may be a little more than it had been in the past. However, as the cost to run our business rises, this is the only way we can continue to serve you and the rest of our community with the quality and goodness you’ve come to expect from us (while still saving you money).

We hope you understand the need for this change and that you will let us feed you for many years to come.

There Are Some Restrictions:

• You must be a teacher or employee of the Hoboken school system
• A minimum purchase of $5.00 is required to get the discount
• Cannot be combined with other offers (punch cards, coupons, etc)

Those prices are unchanged. You can still get your small coffee for $1.00, large for $2.00. Bring your own cup and all sizes are $1.00 (up to 20oz).

All bios seem to start with where a person is from. While that’s arguably important, photographer Nicole Eryan likes to think that where a person is going deserves just as much time on the written line as well. For her, the future holds unchained timed traveling, as a woman alone with a backpack strapped. And while this description is non-descript, that is the beauty of it.

With parents who grew up in Cairo, Nicole always carried a sense of respect that there was an entire world that woke up beating to the same yet somehow different drum as we do here in Hoboken. And she uses her camera to capture this.

Nicole says of photography, “Not only is it a tool, but it is our language. It is the worldwide, universal communication. Art, photography, and writing are the means in which we all, as humans, can express our emotions. And somehow, it is understood. And sometimes, it is the only thing that is.”
