D’s Soul Full Cafe has a special art show planned for the month of May. In honor of Mother’s Day, we’ll be celebrating the art of the mothers of several of the Hoboken area’s favorite musicians. Louisa M. Pla (mother of Nelson Pla & Joe Pla of clueLess) and Kathleen Whalen Giannotti (mother of Marc Giannotti).

Kathleen Whalen Giannotti

Creativity has always been a part of Kathleen Whalen Giannotti’s life in the form of writing fiction, poetry, and songs, playing guitar and singing, or drawing, which was her first interest. She has no formal training in drawing. Her mother’s family was artistic and as a child Kathleen was surrounded by paintings and drawings. Some of her fondest childhood memories are of drawing pictures with her mother.

Louisa M. Pla

Born in Colon, Matanzas, Cuba in 1928 Louisa M. Pla has been painting for as long as she can remember. Self taught, as a child she watched her paternal grandfather, Norberto De Armas-Carrillo paint still life and portraits. She attended the University of Havana, married and immigrated to the U.S. in 1958 with husband, Joseph M. Pla. As an acute observer of the natural world her pieces are memories of her childhood’s Caribbean island. Retired and living in the suburbs of New Jersey, Louisa still enjoys the natural world.

What’s remarkable to us is how this show reveals a deeper family connection as each artist credits their own parents or grandparents for being their inspirations. Please join us in this celebration of family, art and music.

Coinciding with the theme of the month, our artists’ children will be performing on our li’l stage. Marc Giannotti will bring his raw, passionate songs. Brothers Nelson and Joe Pla will bring their unique blend of folk-rock world fusion.

Drummer and singer/songwriter Nelson Pla will bring a variety of music to our li’l stage. Whether it’s with his own project clueLess or any number of projects, you can expect a great day of music. His mother, Louisa M. Pla is one of our featured artists this month.

Marc Giannotti

Singer/songwriter Marc Giannotti’s passionate, honest and often raw rock ballads are a long-time staple on the Hoboken music scene. Sketches by Marc’s mother Kathleen Whalen Giannotti will also grace our walls.

Shannon Kelley is a local artist and recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts with a degree in Visual and Critical Studies and a minor in Photography. Working mainly with photography, Shannon has recently stepped outside her comfort zone (as she puts it) to experiment mixed media and small installations.

My work focuses on self-portraiture with inspirations pulled from personal experience, New York, and current events.

We’re thrilled to be hosting Shannon’s first show since graduating college. Please be sure to come by and show your support.

As a key creative voice behind bands such as Eugene and The Fave, Dom has made quite a name for himself in the Hoboken Music Scene. Most recently, making music for Dom is a family affair with his sister Jaime Rose and cousin Ed Smith and friends like Dave Entwistle and Fran Azzarto.

For the month of April, Dom will bring some classic Eugene songs, favorites from The Fave, new solo pieces rarely played in public and a whole lot of fun to our li’l stage. Come by each Sunday (except for Easter).

Whether it’s fronting the ukulele-driven Lloyd United or partnering up with other local artists such as Stacy & The Skywalkers, Gold N Brown or simply sitting in to jam with other musicians, Lloyd Gold loves to perform. And it shows.

The best way to describe Lloyd’s style is exuberant. From subtly emotional songs to rowdy shanties to mock sword fights, nothing compares. And we are thrilled to have Lloyd as both our Featured Artist and Music Resident for the month of March.

Each Sunday afternoon promises to bring a unique group of musicians and set of music to our li’l space. We’ll kick things off with an Art Opening party featuring Lloyd’s paintings on Friday evening 3/2/12.
