February 6, 2014 is Time to Talk Day

A day spent raising awareness & sharing the message that mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of.

This was a cool, last-minute opportunity for D’s Soul Full Cafe to take part in. It’s a unique event which is meant to raise awareness and challenge common stereotypes surrounding mental illness thru handmade art.

We were approached by Brenda Luchetti of Hoboken University Medical Center about ‘Time to Talk Day‘. Founded by a group in the UK known as Time to Change, the day is meant to start conversations about mental health issues.

The concept of the project is to come see this funky, artsy tree created by staff and guests of the Psychiatric ward of the hospital. As cool as it looks, it’s more than a work of art. Hanging from each of its colorful limbs are hand-designed pill bottles containing inspirational quotes. Guests are invited to pick one, read it (aloud or not) and either keep it or return it for someone else to read.

So stop by, see the tree, get some inspiration and maybe learn a thing or two about mental health issues. It’ll be here on February 6, 2014 from 7AM-9PM.

More About Time to Talk Day
Nine in ten people with a mental health problem experience stigma and discrimination. We think this is unfair. There are lots of things you can do to help us spread the word about Time to Change, to get people talking about mental health, and support friends, family or colleagues.

On Thursday 6 February, we will be asking more people than ever to come together on a single day to show that it’s time to talk about mental health. Read More…
