February 2013 Artist: Lauren Smith

Local artist Lauren Smith (and by local we mean one of our neighbors) brings her emotional and symbolic art to our walls for February.

Originally from Pittsburgh (go Steelers!), Lauren Smith is an artist living in Hoboken and frequents D’s Soul Full Café with her husband and their Boston Terrier. Two paintings, Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh and Remembering Guernica by Pablo Picasso, taught her that artists portray both emotion and thought simultaneously through the use of images, colors, and brushstrokes.

Smith produces allegorical paintings representing the extremes of the human experience. She uses color and symbolism to convey emotions and situations, even the ones often discouraged by society. Recurring motifs include meadows, the ocean, wine bottles, and mermaids.

Living in Hoboken has sparked a curiosity to paint several cityscapes: this will be Lauren’s “summer project”.

D’s does not take any money from our artists or musicians. Any proceeds from art or music sold go directly to them.
